Default AFR: Need to break China's critical material dominance

The main points of the AFR article: Western allies need to break China’s critical minerals monopoly

Critical minerals are essential for military and electronic equipment and clean energy technology.

China has a monopoly on the supply of many critical minerals.

This monopoly gives China power over other countries.

Western countries need to break their reliance on China for critical minerals.

The US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo warned that China's willingness to cut off supplies to nations that have incurred Chinese displeasure makes it vital for allies to work together on extracting and processing these minerals.

Summary of the AFR article: Albanese doubles critical minerals subsidies to $4b

The Australian government is doubling its investment in critical minerals. ($2billion to $4billion) focused on producers not explorers.


The government is meeting with US officials to discuss supply chains.

The Inflation Reduction Act in the US provides subsidies for critical minerals, and Australia wants to ensure it can benefit from this.

China currently dominates the critical minerals processing sector.

“Australia is committed to building sustainable and secure critical minerals supply chains
with the United States,”

Advisers include: Australian mining chiefs attending the roundtable include Lynas Corporation’s Amanda Lacaze, Nyrstar’s Dale Webb, Alliance Nickel’s Paul Kopejtka, Alpha HPA’s Rimas Kairaitis, Australian Strategic Materials’ Rowena Smith and Lithium Australia’s Simon Linge.
